Bird houses on poles

Purple Martin bird houses are built to attract the largest swallow in North America. These birds seem to be looking for these birdhouses, because if you build one, it will not be long before it is occupied.

They eat mosquitoes, dragonflies, moths and beetles – so in addition to giving you the enjoyment of watching the birds, they help keep these pests under control wherever you place the birdhouse. If you like to entertain outside on your patio – or just like to barbeque a lot for your own family, you will find putting up one of these birdhouses will make your backyard experiences much more enjoyable. If you have a backyard that is near a preserved natural area, it is even better for getting these birds to your birdhouse.purple martin bird house

Purple Martins depend upon humans to provide them with homes. They enjoy the activity of humans going on around their home base. Preferring white birdhouses, it is advisable to paint your birdhouse white in order to attract them as quickly as possible. They are very social birds, and because of this, the plans for these kinds of birdhouses are set up like a bird apartment house. Many birds will live in one house – with a community atmosphere.

Constructing them in a pagoda style is very common, set up with individual units for each bird to occupy. These birdhouses are set up on high poles and as the birds survey the things going on below, they will sing and chirp to one another.

Each compartment should be about 6 inches by 6 inches, and although it is not hard to build one, it helps if you have some woodworking skills before setting out to build one of these. Each hole should be 2 ¼ inches in diameter and about one inch off the floor of each compartment.

Predators find these colonies of interest, so watch out for the welfare of your feathered guests.

Even though it is a considerable project, you will be very excited to watch the social interaction of these birds from your backyard.

I have built several birdhouses, including a purple martin birdhouse. This would not be my choice for a first project as it is a bit complex. But after you have built a few others, you will be able to build one of these.

It is best to start out with a simple one and move on into the more complex ones afterward. The experience you gain in the rustic birdhouse makes it easier to take on the bigger houses.

This is such a cool project! I agree that it’s not the best choice for a beginner, but it is very rewarding to build one like this one.

I built one, and it was pretty challenging – but well worth it when it was complete. I think the next one will go faster.
